CIME launches first essay contest on media ethics
Entries accepted until Nov. 15
The Center for International Media Ethics (CIME) invites journalists to join the Ethicontest, its first essay writing competition on ethical issues in the media.
The Ethicontest is open to journalists and journalism students who would like to explore the theme, “Dissemination of information: Government interests, national security and freedom of speech—how to strike the right balance?”
CIME wants contestants to focus on how journalists can be more responsible given their increasing freedom in accessing government information. The essay, CIME said, must focus on how a journalist can decide when reporting an issue or event that could compromise national security.
Winners will receive a scholarship to become certified in, and help expand the concept of “J-Ethinomics”. According to CIME, “J-Ethinomics” unites the concepts of Ethics and Economics in Journalism. It is founded on the idea that sound ethical practice is a strategy media organizations can adapt to generate income. Stanford-schooled journalist and CIME co-founder Melisande Middleton coined the term.
Essays may be sent, along with the name, country of residence and contact details, through email (ethicontest@cimethics.org). Deadline for accepting entries is on Nov. 14, Sunday. Other inquiries regarding the contest may be sent to the official CIME email (info@cimethics.org).
CIME is a non-profit organization operating with a network of journalists over the world “to provide training, discussion and expertise in the ethics of their profession”.
