Siemens to award “green” journalists

The Indonesian arm of telecommunications company Siemens has announced its initiative to award journalists in ASEAN-member countries who report developments in sustainable technology.

Siemens Indonesia will announce the first set of the Siemens Green Technology Journalism Awards on February 2011. The awards are intended to encourage journalists to pursue or to continue reporting on environment-friendly technology by giving them incentives.

More reporting on green technology, according to the company, is its way to raise public awareness, which will hopefully lead to increased support for and use of environmentally-sound technologies.

Articles must have been published in print or online, from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2010. Articles published in newspapers, magazines and websites may be sent under the Professional journalist group; and those published in university publications and journals, under the Young journalist group. One winner and one finalist will be awarded for each of the three categories—Energy Efficiency, Industrial Productivity, and Sustainability— under the professional journalists cluster.

Meanwhile, an overall winner and a finalist will be awarded under the young journalists cluster.

Journalists may send entries originally written in Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, Tagalog (Filipino), Thai and Vietnamese, provided they have English translations. These entries will be evaluated according to the following criteria: news value, relevance to either of the three categories, and journalist’s writing and language technique.

Entries must include the accomplished registration form, a pdf or scanned copy of the article from where it is originally published, and a certificate from the author’s school or media organization; and may be sent online (http://www.siemens.asia/event/Green-Journalism/Entries/) on or before December 31, 2010 (11pm).

Winners from each of the professional and student journalist categories will receive $1,000 and $500 respectively, and will be sent to Germany for the Technical University of Berlin’s workshop on sustainable technology. Meanwhile, all finalists under the professional and student journalist groups will get $800 and $250, respectively.

PT Siemens is the Indonesia-based regional company of global firm Siemens AG. Currently, Siemens produces instruments and technologies for the use of the energy, industry and healthcare sectors as well as those of households (lighting, hearing aids). In the light of increased environmental awareness, the company has made use of “green” technology in developing its products.
