Six journalists to join 35th JVO Journalism Seminar on November 27

THE CENTER FOR MEDIA FREEDOM AND RESPONSIBILITY (CMFR) will hold the 35th Jaime V. Ongpin Journalism Seminar (JVOJS) on Thursday, November 27. For the first time, CMFR will hold the event at the Media Center TV Studio, University of the Philippines (UP) College of Media and Communication, Diliman, Quezon City.
Six journalists from online and broadcast media organizations will discuss radical changes in the landscape of news and the future of journalism. They are:
Lian Buan
Rappler
Cristina Chi
Philstar.com
Dwight De Leon
Rappler
Carmela Fonbuena
Formerly executive director of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism
Edson Guido
TV5
Dominic Gutoman
Bulatlat
They were selected by senior journalists who are members of CMFR’s board of trustees.
CMFR established the JVOJS to recognize journalists who have distinguished themselves for the quality of their work in the context of best practice, press freedom protection, and the promotion of media ethics.Â
The seminar serves as a living memorial to the late business leader Jaime V. Ongpin, who also served as President Corazon Aquino’s secretary of finance. Although he was not a journalist, Ongpin actively supported the “alternative press,” strengthening its capacity to provide verified news and information during the early eighties and help Filipinos understand urgent political issues of the time.Â
