Seven journalists to discuss democracy, the future of Philippine media in Jaime V. Ongpin Journalism Seminar 2022

ON THURSDAY, October 27, the Center for Media Freedom & Responsibility (CMFR) will hold the Jaime V. Ongpin Journalism Seminar 2022 online.
This year’s panel of discussants will feature seven journalists from television and online news organizations. The discussion will focus on issues related to democracy and press freedom in the country.
CMFR established the Jaime V. Ongpin Journalism Seminar to recognize journalists who have distinguished themselves for the quality of their work in the context of best practice, press freedom protection, and the promotion of media ethics.
The annual event serves as a living memorial for the late business leader who also served as Secretary of Finance, Jaime V. Ongpin. A non-journalist, Ongpin actively supported the “alternative press,” strengthening its capacity to provide verified news and information during the political ferment of the early eighties, to help Filipinos understand the urgent political issues then confronting the country.
Selected by senior journalists who are members of CMFR’s Board of Trustees, the panelists this year are:
Cristina Eloisa Baclig
Inquirer.net
Karmina Constantino
ABS-CBN
Christian Esguerra
Independent (formerly with ABS-CBN)
Maeanne Los Baños
TV5
Mike Navallo
ABS-CBN
Len Olea
Bulatlat
Rambo Talabong
Rappler
The panel discussion will be followed by the presentation of CMFR’s Award of Distinction and the Marshall McLuhan Fellow for 2022.
The Embassy of Canada has sponsored the Marshall McLuhan Fellowship, named after the Canadian communication theoretician, for 24 years. It consists of a two-week familiarization and lecture tour of Canadian media and academic organizations, and later, a lecture tour of Philippine universities under Embassy auspices and with the support of SunLife Financial, Inc.
