Philippines Ranked 138th in 2016 World Press Freedom Index

THE PHILIPPINES remains among countries with “very difficult press situations in the world, according to the 2016 World Press Freedom Index released by the Paris-based group Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF- Reporters Without Borders) on April 20, 2016.

Annually published since 2002, the index “reflects the intensity of the attacks on journalistic freedom and independence by governments, ideologies and private-sector interests during the past year.” The Philippines ranked 138th out of the 180 countries surveyed by RSF, garnering a total score of 44.66 points. A country’s total score is based on seven categories: Pluralism, Media Independence, Environment and Self-Censorship, Legislative framework, Transparency, Infrastructure and Abuses.

Last year, the Philippines was ranked 141st  of 180 countries, with a score of 41.19.

The index also reported that among Southeast Asian nations, Vietnam and Laos both fall under a “very serious press situation.”
