Promoting Roxas

JEERS TO several major newspapers for promoting a possible presidential candidate in next year’s elections.

The Daily Tribune (“LP members in House see windfall of economic benefits if Roxas wins”, June 22, 2015), The Standard (“‘Roxas administration’ to boost PH economy”, June 23, 2015), and Philippine Star (“LP sees economic boom under ‘Roxas administration’,” June 22, 2015) cited statements from three Liberal Party (LP) members praising the benefits of a possible ‘Roxas administration’. All the articles quoted Oriental Mindoro Representative Reynaldo Umali, Eastern Samar Representative Ben Evardone, and Caloocan City Representative Edgar Erice.

They highlighted incumbent Interior Secretary Mar Roxas’ achievements as the “Father of the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry” and the country’s probable economic boost should he win as president.

The Daily Tribune slyly wove in reports from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas on the BPO industry’s possibility of surpassing remittances as a “strong pillar for economic growth”. It mislead readers into attributing the sector’s success to Roxas alone, since only he has the “deep knowledge and love” needed in managing the BPO industry, according to Umali.

The Standard assumed that Roxas is the sure winner in the upcoming presidential race based on his six-point gain in the recent Social Weather Stations survey. The article appeared on the third page and was beside a piece questioning Grace Poe’s citizenship.

The Philippine Star ended with a subtle campaign for Roxas through Erice’s suggestion that “Filipinos must be aware of Roxas’ extensive background on management and economics” and Evardone’s hint that the “presumptive” LP bet’s experience could be a boost to other fledgling sectors.

The articles did not provide the context or purpose of the interview with the LP members.

CMFR called out other news organizations practicing the same old cliché for other presidential bets in a previous monitor. (“News reports or Press releases”, June 5, 2015)
