PH journalists recognized in 2015 SOPA Awards

Two Filipino journalists bagged top awards in the 2015 Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) Awards for Editorial Excellence. The awarding ceremonies were held at the Hongkong Convention and Exhibition Center last June 10.

SOPA named Nancy Carvajal of the Philippine Daily InquirerĀ Journalist of the Year for her extensive work on the pork barrel scam. Her entries included parts of her original 13-part series on the files submitted by whistleblower Benhur Luy, and her exclusive stories on the alleged Batangas property of Vice President Jejomar Binay. Carvajal was previously recognized by the Center for Media Freedom & Responsibility as Outstanding Journalist of 2013.

Edwin Bacasmas, also from the Inquirer, took home the award for Excellence in News Photography- Category B (newspapers that circulate in one or two countries) for his entry ā€œHome Street Homeā€, a photograph of a family sleeping in a makeshift cart in a street in Makati City.

The Filipino journalists’ awards were among 97 given by SOPA this year. The Inquirer is the sole member of SOPA from the Philippines.

JNBF Investigative Reporting Program

The Journalism for Nation Building Foundation (JNBF) has opened its second round of grant applications for in-depth and investigative reporting on the following themes: justice, corruption and transparency, peace and conflict, and the environment.

Journalists, freelancers Ā or staff members of news organizations Ā interested in applying Ā must submit stories with a minimum of 10,000 words and a maximum of 30,000, including a three-page brief describing the subject, expected findings, plan of action and budget for research. Those who did not qualify in the first round of applications are welcome to re-apply.

Two qualified applicants will be given a grant of P100,000 each and three months to complete their research and writing.

2015 AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards

The American Association for the Advancement of Science, in partnership with The Kavli Foundation, is now accepting entries to the 2015 AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards.

The awards are open to journalists working for independent news organizations around the globe. Reports on the field of science, mathematics, and engineering published, aired, or posted online within the contest year July 1, 2014 to July 15, 2015 are eligible for submission under any of Ā the following categories: 1) Large Newspaper, 2) Small Newspaper, 3) Magazine, 4) Radio, 5)Television: In-depth Reporting or Spot News/Feature Repoting 6) Online, and 7) Children’s Science News.

For each category, two awards will be given: a Gold award worth $5,000 and a Silver award worth $3,500. The awarding ceremony will be held in Washington, D.C on February 2016.
