Newseum honors 139th Filipino journalist killed
The Newseum Institute held on June 8 its annual rededication ceremony for journalists killed in the line of duty in 2014 by honoring Filipino journalist Ruby Garcia and 13 other media workers in its Journalists Memorial.
Garcia, a reporter for the Manila-based tabloid Remate and a blocktimer in radio station DWAD, was murdered in Cavite in April last year. She is the 139th Filipino journalist whose name is included in the two-story glass panel dedicated to the recognition of reporters who died while covering the news. The gallery also serves as a reminder of the perils that journalists face in pursuit of their profession.
Along with Garcia, 13 other journalists were chosen to represent their colleagues who died in different parts of the world last year. They were: Yusuf Ahmed Abukar (Radio Ergo and Mustaqbal Radio, Somalia), Simone Camilli (The Associated Press, Israel), Michel du Cille (The Washington Post, Liberia), James Foley (freelance, Syria), Nils Horner (Sveriges Radio, Afghanistan), Camille Lepage (freelance, Central African Republic), Muftah Bu Zeid (Brnieq, Libya), Irshad Mastoi (Online International News Network and ARY News, Pakistan), Pablo Medina (ABC Color, Paraguay), Anja Niedringhaus (The Associated Press, Afghanistan), Luke Somers (freelance, Yemen), Steven Sotloff (freelance, Syria), and Vyacheslav Veremiy (Vesti, Ukraine).
The memorial recognizes more than 2,000 reporters, photographers, news executives, and media workers from around the world.
