Demeaning

JEERS TO the Philippine Daily Inquirer for using a photo, which occupied about one-third of its front page, of the winner of a Miss Bikini pageant.

The Inquirer published on May 23 the full body photo in a bikini of the winner of the Miss Bikini Philippines pageant. The Inquirer did not say in the caption that they were one of the media partners of the pageant.

A practice common in the tabloids, such depictions of women have long been criticized as demeaning. The photo was also an anomaly on the front page of a broadsheet, and provokes the question for what journalistic, public interest purpose the Inquirer did it.
