Maynard, 56
American journalist Dori Maynard died last February 24. She was 56.
A firm advocate of diversity in journalism and civic life, Maynard was the president of the Robert C. Maynard Institute of Journalism Education, an institute founded by her father in 1977 in an effort to train minority journalists and promote accurate representation of minorities in the news media. (LA Times)
Before joining the Institute in 1994, Maynard was a reporter at the Bakersfield Californian, the Detroit Free Press, and The Patriot Ledger in Massachussets. Maynard was also the first woman to follow her father to Harvard as a Nieman scholar.
Maynard was a regular at journalism gatherings including South by Southwest, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Online News Association and Associated Press Media Editors. She was also a popular speaker at university programs. The Society of Professional Journalists named her a fellow in 2001. In 2003, she was named one of the 10 Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area. Maynard was also given the Asian American Journalists Association ‘s Leadership in Diversity Award in 2008. Golovnina, 34
Russian journalist Maria Golovnina passed away last February 23. She was 34.
Golovnina had been working for Reuters as the news agency’s bureau chief for Pakistan and Afghanistan since 2013.She was ptrviously  involved with Reuters in Tokyo in 2001 and subsequently worked in postings around the world including London, Singapore, Moscow, Afghanistan and Iraq. (Tribune)
She was a veteran in covering events in some of the world’s most dangerous places. From 2002 to 2005, Golovnina was assigned in Russia where she covered the early years of the Putin presidency, the Moscow theatre siege and bomb attacks by Chechen rebels.
Golovnina became a Chief Correspondent in Central Asia in afterwards, reporting on revolutions and protests in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Fierce in her commitment to report quickly and accurately, she spent much of 2011 covering the war in Libya despite attendant risks. After settling in London for a short time, she went back overseas to her final assignment in Pakistan. (Interaksyon)
