Context seriously missing

Jeers to the Manila Bulletin for failing to provide context in a Dec. 15 report on politician and political kingpin Luis “Chavit” Singson, who heads the Singson political dynasty in the North.

“Chavit to run for mayor in Narvacan” ran the headline in the paper on Singson’s announcement that he will run for mayor in Narvacan, which has been ruled by the Zaragoza family for more than two decades.
“I’ll run for mayor in Narvacan to end once and for all the political dynasty of Edgar Zaragoza and for him to stop floating news that he can defeat us in the gubernatorial post,” Singson told the Bulletin. Zaragoza, a former Narvacan mayor and incumbent administrator of the National Tobacco Administration, has gone public about running for the Ilocos Sur gubernatorial post, the paper reported.

Singson served as Ilocos Sur governor. The report added that his son Ryan is the incumbent governor. Another Singson son, Ronald, sits as the House representative for the first district of Ilocos Sur.

The report however did not explain that Singson himself is the head of the powerful Singson political dynasty, whose members also hold several political posts in the region.
