Nizami, 86

PAKISTANI NEWSPAPER journalist and editor Majid Nizami died of a heart ailment last July 26. He was 86. 

Nizami was the editor and head of the Nawa-i-Waqt Group of Publications. (Nawa-i-Waqt editor and head Majid Nizami passes away, Pakistan Today)

He was the president of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society for the years 1981-1985, 1992, and 1996-1999. He was also president of the Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors for several terms. (APNS grieved, The Nation) 

His awards include the Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Order of Excellence, highest honor given to any civilian in Pakistan), Sitara-i-Pakistan (Star of Pakistan) and Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence, third highest honor and civilian award in Pakistan).

In a statement on Nizami’s passing, The Nation said: “Over the years as editor of Nawaiwaqt, the achievements Majid Nizami accumulated were many. But not one of these came to define him. In professional organizations, he earned admiration for his vociferous resistance to military rule, and a reputation for being unabashedly outspoken when dealing with presidents and prime ministers — something not all editors were willing to risk their commercial safety on. Although known as an intensely private man, he reveled in company and charmed with ease; as much a public figure at times, as a journalist. (An Iconic Editor, The Nation)
