The United Nations declared November 2 as International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. However, press freedom advocates in the Philippines focus on November 23 to commemorate the 2009 Ampatuan Massacre in which 58 men and women including 32 journalists were killed in Ampatuan town, Maguindanao province.

Media groups demand justice: In year four of the Ampatuan Massacre

VARIOUS MEDIA groups, schools and the relatives of the Ampatuan massacre victims commemorated the fourth anniversary of the massacre and the third International Day to End Impunity through a “human chain” in Rajah Sulayman Park, Manila on November 22.

Impunity Reigns as Killings Continue

NINETEEN (19) journalists have been killed for their work in the Philippines since 2010 when Benigno Aquino III assumed the Presidency, even as delays hound the trial of the accused in the Ampatuan massacre. And in 2013 alone, at least 66 instances of threats, physical assaults, illegal arrests, libel suits and other forms of harassments have been recorded in the Philippines, including in the National Capital Region.
